Sew a neck pillow – great for travel!

We are a family that travels often and loves to do so. One of us is always on a plane over the Atlantic, recovering from jet lag, or planning the next exciting trip. If you would like to sew something nice for your trip, I naturally have the perfect post for you :)

Naturally, a neck pillow is a must-have!

A neck pillow needs to be ready at a moment's notice when you want to lean back and relaxedly drift off into dreamland.
And: It shouldn't slip.

Furthermore, it should be nice and compact so that it can be easily stored anywhere at any time.

Sew a neck pillow

Quite a challenge for me!

So I experimented, tried things out, and looked for solutions.

The result is a compact neck pillow with cute tie-straps and a practical Velcro closure, which allows you to attach the neck pillow to a suitcase, carry-on, or handbag.

In terms of style, it is reminiscent of the cute Peter Pan collars of the seventies.

The neck pillow is nice and compact, yet still provides great support for your head and chin.

Can you also use the pattern to sew a neck pillow for children?

Of course! The pillow is so compact that it also fits children very well!

What fabrics can you use to sew the neck pillow?

I used woven cotton fabric for the neck pillows in the photos.

You can also use jersey, sweatshirt fabric, or minky. However, the pillow will become significantly more voluminous with stretchy fabrics.

If you want to use a stretchy fabric, I recommend reinforcing the back of the fabric with an iron-on interfacing beforehand. This way, the neck pillow is nice and soft while still holding its shape.

Note: In the tutorial, I used pictures of two different neck pillows. I was sewing in stereo again. ;)

Don't let that confuse you. I simply chose the pictures that show the steps most clearly.

Can beginners also sew the neck pillow?

Logically! The neck pillow is a great sewing project for beginners!
